Travelknowhow Scotland and CalCommuter Announce Partnership to Transform Workplace Travel

Travelknowhow Scotland and CalCommuter have joined forces to deliver smarter travel planning for Scottish employers.

Travelknowhow Scotland and CalCommuter have joined forces to deliver smarter, data-driven travel planning for Scottish employers in 2025/26.

Working closely with Scotland’s seven Regional Transport Partnerships (RTPs), the initiative between Travelknowhow Scotland and CalCommuter will support workplaces throughout Scotland in reducing carbon emissions, encouraging behaviour change and promoting more active and sustainable commuting by using data driven insights to uncover viable opportunities for change.

At the heart of this partnership is a powerful combination: CalCommuter’s innovative commute planning technology and Travelknowhow Scotland’s expertise in workplace engagement and travel behaviour change.

Data-Driven Travel Planning That Works

CalCommuter is an intelligent staff commute survey platform which automatically works out the costs, duration and emissions of an employee’s current commute and any viable alternative commutes.  It has been designed to take away the pain, and maximise the benefits, of doing an annual staff travel survey: both for the employees completing it, and the organisations administering it.

Benefits to your employees:

  • It’s a very short survey – taking less than 2 minutes to complete on average
  • It has an outcome: each employee receives a personalised commute plan to their email inbox which has worked out the cost, duration and emissions of all their viable commute options

Benefits to you as an employer:

  • Automatic calculation of your scope 3 carbon emissions figures for employee commuting and homeworking for public bodies reporting/ sustainability reporting requirements.
  • Easy analysis of current commuting patterns for employees to worksite.
  • Ready-made mailing lists of those employees with viable alternative travel modes who have opted in to further contact to allow for target communications to nudge travel behaviour change moving forward.
  • Start to build evidence on commuting patterns and potential demand for travel alternatives (for example with public transport provision)

Building on Success

Throughout 2024/25, Travelknowhow Scotland has worked with CalCommuter on a series of successful projects with organisations including East Lothian Council, BBC Scotland, Scottish Legal Aid Board (SLAB), Roemex Ltd, City of Edinburgh Council,  and business parks across the the Strathclyde area of western Scotland. The insights generated have already helped organisations better understand commuting patterns, identify key opportunities for modal shift and begin to build evidence to inform longer-term planning.

Bespoke Support for Scottish Workplaces

Through this partnership, participating employers will receive free consultancy support from Travelknowhow Scotland, including survey design and implementation, staff engagement, strategy development and tailored Travel Action Plans based on CalCommuter data.

These bespoke action plans will help employers:

  • Begin building an evidence base for active and sustainable travel changes
  • Focus efforts on employees with viable travel alternatives
  • Introduce meaningful measures to encourage active and sustainable travel
  • Reduce local congestion and workplace parking pressure
  • Minimise scope 3 emissions to support net zero, wellbeing and ESG objectives
  • Improve employee health and wellbeing

A Smarter, More Sustainable Scotland

This partnership offers a unique opportunity for organisations across Scotland to lead by example, using data to drive decisions and unlock practical ways to shift travel behaviour.
